ABOUT

What do you love about music?
I find the background mechanics of music fascinating! It’s crazy to think that we can utilize music theory to (mostly) explain why music makes us feel certain emotions. I think that’s what makes music so unique compared with other art forms.

Who is your favorite artist?
Oh, goodness — there are too many! Hilary Hahn, dodie, John Powell, and Vitamin String Quartet are just a few to start.

What are your top five desert-island albums?
Slavonic March, Op. 31 — Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
Recomposed by Max Richter: Vivaldi — the Four Seasons — Max Richter
Modern Vampires of the City — Vampire Weekend
Oppenheimer (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) — Ludwig Göransson
American Quartet — Antonín Dvořák

Do you play in a band or currently perform?
I currently perform with the Purdue Fort Wayne Orchestra, Headwaters Church worship team, and many assorted gigs with new and old friends.

BIOGRAPHY

Laura Mergy earned a bachelor’s degree in music technology from Purdue University Fort Wayne. Since the age of four, she has become well-versed in violin through the Suzuki method and has completed Suzuki violin teacher training units 1-4. She finds the mechanics of music to be fascinating. While utilizing classical music in her teaching, she also loves to fiddle around with other genres, such as pop, bluegrass, and contemporary. Laura regularly performs as a member of the Purdue Fort Wayne Orchestra and the Headwaters Church worship team. She enjoys collaborating with other musicians and plays for weddings, church services, funerals, and anywhere that violin music is needed! When not teaching, she can be found tending her many plants, reading, or hiking Indiana hills with friends.

Laura strives to encourage a love of music in all her Sweetwater Academy violin students and invites you to explore your love of music with her!
